I have not painted for a while on a regular schedule. I have been painting furniture for a change. Fun and interesting to say the least. But I am starting back up painting on canvas and hope to post more and more each week as I get my speed back up. This painting is a wee bit larger than 16x20 and part of the painting on the sides will be taken up in the framing process. I always paint on a larger surface so I will have enough to wrap and mount on illustration board or wood then its framed.

A couple of years ago my sister whom lives in Oklahoma gave me some Canna tubers. This is what I get almost 2 year, healthy, tall and nice red flowering cannas.

I have a bucket of the genuine Venetian plaster and love to paint on it from time to time. I apply a good amount the plaster on the birch board spread out with a large palette knife as smooth as I can get it then let it dry. After it has dried usually takes a day or two I then sand it with fine grit sandpaper. I am ready to paint after a nice sanding.

Today I chose a primed cotton Pintura panel. This is very different from the linen I usually paint on. The results will be different in how the paint goes on the surface so the style may look a bit different as well. I could also gesso these cotton panels to get a smoother surface. It all depends if I want to take the time to gesso and wait a while. I like painting on different surfaces and enjoy the challenge. It's difficult to get a good picture but this is my 2nd attempt and most accurate to the painting.

20x24 studio with open loft
I am still doing some research on how I want the walk ways and porch areas to look. Landscaping design may take a little longer.

5x6 bathroom

I may end up buying a cabinet and mirror combo later. I wanted to see what kind of backsplash I may need and how it would look first.

This shot is showing the west end of the studio with a view of the open loft with my daughter. Below the loft are two 4 bulb daylight fluorescent lights and hunter fan that supplies the studio nicely.

This is the north side. I wanted large north windows instead of small upper wall windows. I would rather put a window covering on the window than wish I had more light.

Here is the front of the studio which is facing east. Up in the vaulted area ( not shown) on each side are two track lighting fixtures that supply the shelving area and entry. In this corner are open shelving that measures about 16 inches deep and wraps around the corner. This helps to hold a lot of books, supplies and cuts down on needing more tall shelving. I had them built in a way that I could get doors installed on them if I wanted too. But, I love the ease of just picking off the shelf and not messing with opening a door. I also have a four low rolling type of cabinetry and plastic drawers tubs as well.

The wall color paint is Sherwin Williams Techno Gray ( a calming green and gray mixture ) . The ceiling is from the same scale two shades lighter. I can't remember the name. I am happy with the way the loft windows allow a lot of light into the studio without adding glare. I have plenty of places to paint without direct sunlight. Acting as the general contracter is like juggling and can be stressful. The design and layout I had in mind and modifications during the build went very well.

I need to physically and mentally rest up for the week with a trip to http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/for some treasure hunting. :)

Septic Installation

This is the septic tank dig. Since I live out in the countryside out of city limits I can put a separate system in t0 support my studio. This ended up being way bigger tank than what I had initially asked for. But my septic man said why not get a 600 gallon tank compared to a plastic 300 gallon one for $50 extra. So I said okay. Besides I think the concrete septics are less expensive than the plastic ones and way easier to pump should it ever need to be.

Here is the hole after it was dug. It is common for holes to fill up with water as this one is in damp soil.

By the time the septic was installed the drywall finishing had started.

Cellulose Blown into the walls

Here is a clip of the cellulose being blown into the wall. Cellulose is the ground up paper mixed with chemicals that are supposed to be fire resistant. I hope I never find out.

Hello again.

On Wednesday the foam insulation man blew the foam in the ceiling. It doubled the cost of the putting this type of insulation in but I am satisfied. Before I chose foam for the ceiling I researched and read up on it. The rating on the foam is the best on the market. It is hot and humid in the summer here and cold and cold in the winter. The foam will allow a tight seal to keep warm or cool air from escaping or entering the studio through the ceiling.

Next the walls will be blown in with the cellose insulation. The reason why I did not have the walls is the cost would have tripled. But, cellulose should do the job very well.

This is the ceiling after the foam has been foam sprayed and trimmed. Next step would be the drywall.

A New Studio

Well, its been almost 5 months since I last posted. This last year has been busy because we moved to the countryside in Arkansas. We live 40 minutes away from Little Rock Arkansas. So far I really like it a lot.

Now, on with the great news. I am having a studio built. Finally after all these years and it will have about 750 square feet of area to set up shop.

I chose my heating and cooling unit first. This was an important part because the studio would need to be built accordingly. So, in December my new unit arrived making the building process more of a reality. The actual construction on my new 20 x 24 ft. artist studio began in December 2008. The siding and brick is now completed along with the electrical line to the main house. The next step is having spray foam insulation in the vaulted ceiling. The walls will have blown in cellulose insulation. I did lots of research on insulation and found spray foam in the ceiling would be more efficient.

My lighting will be 2 4 bulb 4 ft fluorescent T8 with daylight lamps. These lights will be installed under the loft area along with a large ceiling fan. There will be two rows of track lighting one on each side of the vaulted ceiling. I have several plug-in spot lights and an ott light as well that attaches to my easel. In addition to the lights I will have a fluorescent in the loft area and 3 plug-ins. I prefer to paint by natural light and my studio should have plenty of this along with great northern light exposure. In all I have 14 plugs in the wall and one dedicated plug for any future equipment such as a kiln or encaustic heat guns etc.

There is still a lot left to do but I can almost see it completed. Today, I found out I will have to wait an entire week for the foam insulation to be sprayed in. There are not that many foam spray insulators in this part of the country but I am okay with this.

I will probably have laminate flooring installed but have not decided whether it will be light, medium or a dark color laminate. This will come later.

Turner Study Norham Castle, Sunrise

Last Saturday my daughter and I visited the Dallas Museum of Art. Since I am a member we get to see new exhibits before the doors open to the public. This is wonderful because I can really study the paintings.

I must say out of all the famous paintings I have had the privilege to see Joseph Mallord William Turner is the most intriguing and beautiful works. He truly had a talent for capturing nature and energy. I was so inspired I felt compelled to do a quick study the Norham Castle, Sunrise. JMW Turner died 1851. He was worth $8million dollars. He made his fortune as an artist. He also started painting very early in his life. His father who was a barber would put 12 yr old Josephs paintings in the window of his shop hoping to catch the attention of his clients. His father was very supportive of his sons interest in becoming a painter. Those paintings caught the attention and He entered the Royal Academy of Art schools in 1789, when he was only 14 years old,[4] and was accepted into the academy a year later.

You may be surprised this is oil painted on a 4x6 watercolor postcard. It was fun and I have never painted on paper like this before. I will need to seal the back with gesso to keep the oil painting from deteriorating. I sent this painting to a friend of mine in Texas.

This is the very first artist I came in contact with in 1999 on the internet. How I came across Robert I cannot remember. We exchanged several emails and he was very kind in answering all of my questions. I purchased his book as well, it is a good little book for artists.

In the beginning of my journey I learned a lot just by reading his painters keys and weekly newsletters. Today, I ran across this film clip searching information on the use of greys in oil painting.

A little glare is on the pear and the darkest area shows a bit darker. Overall the color is true to life.

My palette was burnt & raw umber, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, cad yellow light, cad red light and titanium white.

Summer a Busy Time

Well, I don't know where to start except to just say I have been very busy this summer. Summers are when kids like to go places, accidents happen easier it seems and yard work is aplenty and other stuff.

I have been painting abstract for the most part this summer. I have enjoyed it immensely and will continue painting them. My abstract paintings are not considered a daily painting because I cannot do them in a day. Too bad because I don't like hanging around the canvas too long. However, I am beginning to be a bit more patient with myself. Also, I have discovered when I paint abstracts I paint my emotions and see colors to the musical tones. I find myself developing a process of internalizing the music and then I let nature takes it course.

So, far its been a good trip and I have won a 3rd place in a juried show in July and won 3rd place in a judged show in August of this year.

Summing up my summer, its been a good one in art and though I have had trials and tribulations in personal stuff I have survived. I look forward to Fall.

I went to Hobby Lobby and cruised the markdown aisle and came across a createx monoprint kit. Well, this is one of the fun prints I made with it. I will try the tree limbs next. There has been ice on the trees for 2 days now and think the frozen drop at the end of the branches would be interesting to print.

When I took Peedy out for a little break today and heard something. I realized it was the trees making a crinkling Mylar like sound. It's been about 12 years since I have seen this kind of weather. I wonder how long I will enjoy the cold. I suspect not for long.

Its Holiday Last Minute Shopping - Little Peedy

Well, between trying to get the last minute shopping, midterm tests and my little Peedy its been busy. Peedy is a Boston Terrier and sometimes Boston's have seizures out of the blue. Well, his brother has them several times a week and had to be put on medication last year. Now, poor little Peedy has had 3 bouts of seizures but over a 8 month period. Today was an awful day for him because he had 3 seizures one right after the other. It was pitiful. He finally came out it after about 2o minutes. He is doing much better and is sound asleep. I will probably sleep with one eye open and both ears listening for any problems with Peedy. I did not get a painting done today but hopefully will be full throttle tomorrow. I know eventually Peedy will need to go on daily medication.

This is a painting for a Christmas card. It is painted from an actual hallmark angel. It is standing on a cloth napkin with a Christmas tree on it. I put a block of wood on the table where my still life setup goes. I then covered the block with the Christmas napkin and stood the angel right by the tree. Instead of making it a still life like my other subjects I wanted it to look more like a novelty painting instead of a still life. I think I accomplished this.

This painting took me longer than I thought it should take. I had purchased a couple of oil primed linen panels and just now getting around to trying them out. This is oil primed linen on Italian wood. I think the oil primed is a bit more challenging for me to paint on and not to my liking. So far my favorite is the Creative Mark Centurion LX stretched linen and Raymar panels.

Good News!! I just had a phone call this morning about putting some pieces in a local gallery and gift shop. This painting is in the selected group for Monday December 11. I will post the shop name when this happens.

This is a study of a white squash. I had never done a white squash and thought I would try it out. I also used some copal medium to show more of a brush stroke.

I found myself using too many different brushes on this one little practice. I will try it again at a later date. Probably next summer because this came from my garden. I want to cook it tomorrow before it shrivels away.

I used a background of dark greenish brown paper. It was a bit of a challenge but think it turned out pretty close.

I was in the grocery store and was in a vegetable and fruit mood. I spied an interesting new subject. I asked the produce man what this was. He had no idea. So, When I got to the register it did not take the checker but a minute to figure it out. I actually purchased 3 of these. They were $1.49. The have red juice inside and almost sweet smelling. I have to figure out how to consume these. I usually eat the still life but this one is tricky. I was told the needles were cut off but for some reason every time I pick them up I get little tiny ones in my fingers and hands. So, hopefully I will be able to prepare this and not let $4.47 go to waste.

I found some information on the Cactus Pear also known as Prickly Pear.

prickly pear = Indian fig = Indian pear = barbary fig = tuna = cactus pear Notes: The pulp of these cactus fruits is a brilliant red or, occasionally, a yellowish green, and it tastes a bit like watered-down watermelon. Cooks exploit the color by adding slices of the pulp to fruit salads, or by puréeing it and straining out the seeds. They're quite popular in Hispanic countries and around the Mediterranean. Substitutes: pepino melon OR watermelon (much larger)

Here is my still life setup is below.

I had ordered some Raymar canvas panels last week and got them in time to try one out. I got the Raymar sample pack. There are 4 different types of canvas panels. So far very nice panels. Also, used my Garrett's Copal medium again. I think its really aiding in the application of the paint. I had ordered a bottle a few weeks ago and somehow it got lost but finally came back to Ron Garrett. He was so nice to send me that one too. So, yes I spent a bit more money than had planned but decided to make my second bottle a gift to a very special person. I am going to try the sample bottle of copal concentrate I received with the lost bottle. I will report on that next time I post.

This is a new type of still life set up. I found myself a box that was deep enough to give me a different mood. It has a black background.

I think I will work with the darker background and need to lighten it a bit.

Also, this is my first painting I have used Garretts Copal Medium with. I will need to work with the medium a bit to become familiar with it better. The glare is strong in this digital but thats as good as I could get.

It has a weird looking face and always looks like its watching me. Kind of gives me the willies. I sat it on the computer in my studio. There The Watcher sits watching me. BOO!

I took another digital only this time in the daylight. It's a bit better so not to clog my blog with images, I took the other one off.
Well, I initially wanted a wooden hanger but ended up with a white one.
I had it hanging on the wall by a nail. The light was odd and hard to read on this thin little subject. It was a challenge and also hard to photograph and turned out darker.

Eggs on Red WIP

I was gifted by my sister in-law 5 dozens beautiful different colored farm eggs. Okay, my first thought was to paint them. So, I set out to pick the nicest eggs. I then arranged them on crimson red cloth. There is a slightly bluish green egg, a brown egg and a buff colored egg. This image is a bit dark because I just quickly took a digital.

I got the eggs sketched in and thought, Oh not bad. I started blocking in the dark areas, this is when I realized a challenge lies ahead. So, after about 3 hours of work I have decided it will have to be a wip. I am headed out of town for the weekend. This is rare because I never go anywhere. I am suppose to pick up my daughter early from school, in 15 min ha! Well, that won't happen so here I sit trying to type out reasons to why I do not have a completed painting a day, today. Eggs are hard! I shall prevail even if it is a WIP. So, until next week.

I painted for the first time in a few days. Since my water damage it has been rather unsettling. But now, I am back painting. I purchased a new camera by sony today. So far I seem to like it ok.

Well, my camera finally stopped working. This means I can't take pictures of my artwork and put them on my blog. I am going to look for a replacement camera this week.

Between the house having bad water damage and my camera, I hope this is the last episode of bad luck. This is getting a bit stressing to say the least.

I will be absent from posting over the next few days. We've had water damage to our home due to outside drain pipe blockage. Meanwhile I will be dealing with floor repair/replace, restoration and insurance companies to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.

Becky's Jingle Bob

This is my sisters spur rightfully named Becky's Jingle Bob. The Jingle Bob is the small metal thing that hangs down and clinks back and forth on the round burr making sounds as the cowboy or cowgirl walks. I arranged this spur on the table to paint it. Unbeknownst to me, I placed the spur upside down. After I finished the painting I realized the spur was upside down. Aww well, I enjoyed painting it just the same.
