3rd Day Workshop

I got as far as blocking this painting in. I may attempt to finish it or maybe not.

I woke up to rain it was very much needed and nice. This morning Bob gave a lecture going over what he had shared with us the 2 days before and answered other questions. After the lecture Bob gave a demo on painting rocks in a stream of water. Well, his rocks sure does not look like my rocks. I could paint a couple but Bob painted many. We were definitely impressed and the painting as always looked way better than the photograph.

We broke for lunch a bit after noon. A couple of people had to leave early and those of us who brought lunch stayed and started on their 3nd painting. I started blocking in my painting and my foot begin to hurt and it worsened and decided that was it. I am going home to soak my foot and put it up. Bob let me take a picture of his photo I was using to paint from to finish it at home. Bob is such a nice person. Anyway, I learned a WHOLE lot and look forward to using what I have learned in this workshop.

Have a great week

2nd Day workshop

This is a study of another landscape. I never try and finish a painting at a workshop when I am learning new information. Some painters think they need to paint a complete painting but its not neccessary as long as they learn about the new process and information.

Well, today started off with a lecture and a demonstration. Bob is extremely good at relating information to others. His demo today was a pastel. I learned a lot and enjoyed watching him.I will post more details on the day later. I am very tired and my foot hurts from standing all day on cement floor and also my cracked toe hurts.

1st day of workshop results

This is the first study in Bob's workshop. Its incomplete but I worked mostly on getting the color correct and fighting with trying to get enough paint mixed up.

Well, I must say 9 to 5 painting is a very tough schedule. Bob started off with a lecture of basics points he paints by. The presentation was very good and very simplified. The assignment was each student choose a photo from a pile Bob brought with him. I happen to choose a landscape with TREES! Not just trees but many trees. I figured okay, I am here to be challenged, egads. Well this is me biting off me than I can chew. eww

I got hung up on details before it was time and this became a complex thinking situation for me. I actually used my brain but not sure it was in the right manner. ha! However, Bob helped me to see how to simplify the landscape and also as long as I am the painter I can leave a clump of trees out if I want to. Hmmm I think for the most part I went ahead and put all the trees in. I did not finish the painting but put in a good days try.

We are using viridian green, cad orange, cad yellow light, ultramarine blue, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, and I am using cad red but the list called for Perylene Red. Brushes are #6 #8 #10 flats and a rigger. I am having a time using a #6. I am used to using #4 for my work and a round ugh! I am painting on canvas panel with another coat of gesso to smooth out the tooth. I have used about 1/2 role of paper towels and managed to dirty up my clean odorless mineral spirits. Oh well, what else it new.

I think for the most part the other painters had a good day. There is one woman in the class her name escapes me now but she painted an awesome painting of a man in a garden with a wheelbarrow. I want that painting. I wonder how much she wants for it. Its beautiful.

Well, after I got home I took my daughter out to eat at get this, SONIC. She wanted a long chili cheese coney dog. Our little dog Peedy had to go so he scammed a few tator tots.

We zipped back home and quickly put on our bathing suits and jumped in the pool. Peedy too.

Jumped in the shower but not after I slipped and fell cracking one of my toes and knocking a big blue bump on my left wrist!! geesh can it get any worse. I sure hope not!!

Until tomorrow, cheers!

3 Day Workshop

I have a 3 day workshop with Bob Rohm 26, 27 & 28th. I will no doubt bring back some great things from this workshop. I feel very lucky to have been able to find out Bob lives very close to me and teaches at thearthouse in Flower Mound once in a while. I thought I would not be able to take any workshops this year since my move to Texas has taken a lot of time and money remodeling our home. I look forward to the challenge and excited to see what part of Bob's style will affect my next paintings.

Plein Air Back Yard

4x6 wc Paper
This is a plein air in my back yard. Not as good as I hoped but I must keep plugging on. The dark thing is an electrical box by the back fence. I begin sweating and dripping on my palette. I sure will be glad when I can stay outside without getting soaking sweat!

Lemon & Pearl Earrings - Still Life

This is a 4x6 still life WIP. I used a different kind of medium with my oil paint and its not reacting the normal way. I am going to finish this painting up and seriously think about not even using this medium mixture again. It was a recipe I received from a thread in an artists group. So much for trying to do something more economically. I have to let this dry and go back and do the detailing. I do not like working on a painting more than one setting!! ugh!

I decided to not complete this painting. I instead took out another lemon and painted it. Its called Lemon Light.

Orchids and Clementines

This is a still life of an orchid I purchased at Lowes garden store area. I also placed 2 clementines on the table to balance it and give it color. I have been working on this painting for 3 days a couple of hours a day. I was able to finish about 90% with no problem. THEN......... I decided to rework the blooms and that ended up being longer than thought.

Here is the setup. Its small and did not want to take up too much band width but you can get the idea. The wall is a warm tanish color but does not show up. I used the grid method to sketch this on my canvas. You can see some of the charcoal lines
